Staff -- Pacific Builder and Engineer, 11/20/2006

Tacoma— DBM Contractors Inc. recently completed two soil nail walls, three soldier pile/tieback walls and 32 drilled shafts along Interstate 5 in Tacoma.

The walls and drilled shafts are part of the additional lanes and interchange improvements at I-5 and State Route 16. The project owner is the Washington State Department of Transportation, and general contractor is Kiewit Pacific Co.

The $7.46-million job included two permanent soil nail walls totaling 118,000 square feet, and three permanent soldier pile and tieback walls totaling 32,000 square feet, as well as 32 drilled shafts for new bridges and widening of existing bridges.

When complete, the I-5 South 48th Street to Pacific Avenue project will provide a new multi-lane, northbound collector/distributor road, which will include a new northbound exit to I-705 and an improved merge from SR 16.
