Granite Construction's Sacramento Facility Wins Community Involvement Award

The National Asphalt Paving Association (NAPA) website sums up the importance of its community involvement winners: "Young people have been the biggest benefactors from many of the programs fielded by NAPA's Community Involvement winners. Whether they've bought school supplies for local kids, opened their quarry for an unforgettable day of activities or taken part in a special career day, these companies have made a lasting, positive impression on the next generation."

Serious About Community Involvement

Granite Construction Company's Bradshaw Facility in Sacramento, California, is the 2006 Winner of the National Asphalt Pavement Association's Community Involvement Award. The award was co-sponsored by ACP.

Among the many community projects that Granite and its employees participated in:

  • Local grade schools and high schools were able to tour the Bradshaw facility to learn about mining and processing aggregate materials, along with environmental controls. Typical of responses from students were, "As a student interested in engineering, this trip to Granite has been really exciting for me. I am only a freshman in high school, so I am really not sure what I am planning for my future. On this field trip, I learned the meaning of how important each individual in a construction business is, and that no one is lower than another. It helps me believe that whatever choice I make in a job, I will be equally important to everyone else in the company ..."
  • Written by Maggie Wong, Sheldon High School. And this from Joshua Hale, a third grader from Galt Christian School: "Thank you for the ride around Granite. Thanks for the pizza too. That was one of the best trips I've had."
  • Granite was a major sponsor of the annual AGC Construction Career Awareness Day. High school students from the surrounding area were allowed to operate heavy equipment, learn about construction careers and visit industry exhibitors.
  • Sponsor of Linking Education and Economic Development (LEED) Day, a professional day of learning at the Bradshaw site for various teachers on how to helptheir students make better career choices.
  • "Capital to Capital," where three Granite employees visited Washington, D.C., to meet with and exchange information about environmental issues with elected leaders, EPA officials and aggregate industry professionals.
  • Close involvement with Clean Air Partnership of the Sacramento Area.
