Demolition work on the Eaton Corporation engine valve manufacturing plant in Saginaw began in July 2007 and was completed in March. Bierlein, of Midland, was the demolition contractor and self-performed all of the demolition work. Besides demolition work, Bierlein performed asbestos and lead abatement, asset recovery, metal and wood recycling, as well as site remediation for the 300,000-square-foot facility.

Most of the building was steel. Approximately 8,000 tons of steel was recycled, along with 200 tons of nonferrous metals. More than 97 percent of the plant was expected to be recycled, leaving a small amount of debris to be landfilled.

Bierlein used Cat 330 and Cat 345 machines on the project. Grapples, shears, concrete pulverizers, and magnets were used for the demolition work. Due to the current scrap steel market, all scrap steel on-site was prepared to less than 2 feet in length and was shipped directly to end-user foundries. The scrap preparation was performed by shear-equipped Cat 330 excavators.
