SMSC gives grant

Staff -- Construction Bulletin, 5/12/2008

The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community, Prior Lake, Minnesota, presented a $1-million grant to the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe to complete Elderly Village on the Tribe's reservation in Eagle Butte, South Dakota, and to fund a transit project. SMSC gave a $3-million loan for the same project in 2005 and provided a $1-million grant in 2006. The project will provide about 60 jobs for local residents while Elderly Village, a federally certified nursing facility, will contain 60 beds in a 50,000-square-foot facility. Some tribal elders are living as far as 175 miles away from the reservation because of the lack of available nursing home beds. Tribal chair Joseph Brings Plenty Sr. said the tribe is grateful for the help to continue elderly care on the reservation and is looking forward to the grand opening.
