UUCF/Andrew Scott Johnson Memorial Scholarship Foundation Names 2008 Scholarship Recipients

The Underground Utility Contractors of Florida/Andrew Scott Johnson Memorial Scholarship Foundation has announced the recipients of its 2008 scholarships. Winners were announced at UUCF’s annual convention, held recently in Naples, FL.
The UUCF/Andrew Scott Johnson Memorial Scholarship Foundation, Inc. was established in memory of the son of two-time UUCF Past President Scott Johnson of Johnson-Davis, Inc., and Robin Johnson. On Dec. 28, 1999, Scott and Robin’s son Andrew "Andy" Scott Johnson was killed in an automobile accident at the age of 19. At the time of his death, Andy was a sophomore at Vanderbilt University studying Civil Engineering with hopes of entering the family business.
The Foundation’s scholarship fund memorializes Andy by providing help to individuals attending college. Since being established in 2000, the Foundation has awarded a total of $119,000 in scholarship funding. Scholarship recipients must be an employee of, or an immediate family member of an employee of, a UUCF member company. Awards are based on an applicant’s scholastic standing, ACT and/or SAT scores, extracurricular activities, community service, work experience, letters of reference and a 500-word essay.
$7,500 One-Time High School Scholarship
The 2008 recipient of the $7,500 high school scholarship, Yang Ge, is the son of Helen He with England, Thims and Miller, Inc. and Ling Ge. Yang Ge will be attending Harvard University in Cambridge, MA, and studying engineering, economics and government.
$7,500 One-Time College Scholarship
The 2008 recipient of the $7,500 scholarship
presented to an individual currently enrolled in college is Mark "Tommy" McCabe, son of Mark and Kim McCabe with C&M Road Builders, Inc. in Sarasota, FL. Tommy was also the recipient of the 2007 scholarship. He has been attending Bucknell University where his intended course of study is business, engineering and international relations.
$3,500 One-Time High School Meritorious Scholarship
The recipient of this scholarship is Benjamin Thomas Hurst, son of Tim Hurst, who is employed by APAC Southeast, Inc. in Jacksonville, and Anne Hurst. Ben plans on attending Tallahassee Community College and Florida State University where he is studying computer engineering.
$3,500 One-Time College Meritorious Scholarship
This scholarship went to Avery Lauren Spofford, daughter of George Spofford, who is employed by Glenn Rasmussen Fogarty & Hooker, P.A. in Tampa, and Anita Spofford. Avery has been attending Vanderbilt University where she is studying English, music literature and women's and gender studies.
$2,500 One-Time High School Meritorious Scholarship
Scholarship recipient Amber Lynn Danielecki is the daughter of Mark Danielecki and Penny Danielecki, who is employed by Raymow Construction Company. Amber plans on attending the University of Florida where she plans on studying biology (pre-med) and political science.
$2,500 One-Time College Meritorious Scholarship
Steven J. Sanchez, son of Rosa Sanchez, who is employed by Johnson-Davis, Inc. in Lantana, and Juan Sanchez, was the recipient of this scholarship. Steven was a Meritorious Scholarship recipient in 2006 and 2007 as well. He is currently attending the University of Miami where he is studying political science and business administration.
$2,000 One-Time High School Meritorious Scholarships
Recipients of these scholarships include the following:
- Brian Matthew Dunbar, son of Robert Dunbar, who is employed by Gulf Equipment Company in Theodore, AL, and Ruth Stevenson Dunbar. Brian is attending Mississippi State University where he is studying communications (public relations) and percussion performance.
- Williams C. Frandsen, son of William "Bill" Frandsen, who is employed by Power & Pumps, Inc. in Jacksonville, and Tracy Frandsen. William is attending Flagler College where he plans on studying business and sports management.
$2,000 One-Time College Meritorious Scholarships
McKenzie Ann Parker, daughter of Robert Parker, who is employed by T & R Tapping Service, Inc. in Casselberry, and Michele Bronson, received a $2,000 One-Time College Meritorious Scholarship. She is also the granddaughter of Sam and Thelma Parker of T & R Tapping Service, Inc. McKenzie has been attending Valencia Community College where her intended course of study is film production and screenwriting.
