California Offers Help To Laid-off Construction Workers
May 29, 2008

Even though California construction workers have been hit hard by the economic slowdown, there are opportunities for re-training or to start an infrastructure apprenticeship thorough the Employment Development Department. (www.edd.ca.gov)

According to the Construction Industry Research Board (CIRB) in April, 2008, California construction employment was down by 81,700 workers  from the same time last year.  The Inland Empire—Riverside and San Bernardino Counties—have seen a loss of some 16,000 construction jobs in that time, according to State data.  Those counties and Orange County are in line to receive a total  $2.5 million  in help for re-training programs, soon.

Rick Reed commented:

From the beginning of time, construction workers have gone where the work is located. Then and now. Providing a 'bridge' to help those who would remain in place giving a community a readily available skill base would benefit all. It would likely be a 'family values' issue for many contractors forced to often to choose between home and work...wherever it may be.
