Special State Budget Session
October 22, 2008

We knew this would have to happen. Governor Schwarzenegger yesterday asked for a special legislative session –sometime before December 1st—to deal with California’s fast- growing budget problems. Just a month after passing the 2008-2009 budget, we are already $1.3 billion in the hole.

Schwarzenegger wants to figure out ways to help California homeowners avoid foreclosures as well as ways to jump-start the economy. Apparently, the construction industry that works on state infrastructure should be encouraged because he is recommending those $billions in voter-approved infrastructure bonds (in 2006) be put to those projects.

One thing he should consider is holding off on CARB’s new off-road diesel regulations until this economy turns around. As is well noted by construction industry experts, state infrastructure projects will be in trouble if many California contractors are forced out of business because they cannot meet the standards in time.
