California Construction Data Update
October 1, 2008

The latest information gathered by the Construction Industry Research Board (CIRB), based in Burbank, CA, shows the general decline in all sectors of heavy construction in California. Note the steep decline in the Construction Employment sector, yet some good sized public projects were also started.

 

Public Buildings and Heavy Construction
Year-To-Date Comparisons:  2007-2008
Public works construction in August 2008 totaled $1.23 billion, down 35% from the prior month and also 35% from August 2007.  Public building in August fell 45% below July numbers and was 36% lower than August 2007.  Heavy construction was 29% lower than the previous month and 34% lower than volume in August 2007.    


California Construction Employment
The California construction employment forecast averaged 811,300 in August 2008, down 2,000 (0.2%) from July and down 79,200 (8.9%) from August 2007.  

 

Public Works Construction, Regional Comparison Year-To-Date
Public works construction in August 2008 showed a 2.4% loss over the first eight months of 2007.  Year-to-date figures for all new public building and heavy construction permits are $4.47 billion in LA-Orange; $3.4 billion in Riverside-San Bernardino-San Diego; $2.85 billion in the Bay Area; $1.27 billion in the Sacramento Valley; $1.28 billion in the San Joaquin Valley; $705 million along the Central Coast; and $695 million in the North State and Sierras.

$90.0 million high school project in Los Angeles County
$30.5 million high school project in San Diego County

Heavy Construction
$134.0 million wind farm project in Kern County
$67.0 million wind farm project in Solano County
$29.7 million highway project in Los Angeles County
$24.0 million water pipeline project in Contra Costa County
