Heavy Construction Update
October 27, 2008
Although the following Construction Industry Research Board (CIRB) data shows expected declines in most areas of heavy construction, the Sacramento Bee (www.sacbee.com) has a good article today (“'06 Bond Money Begins Trickling Into Public Works”) about a ray of hope breaking through.
The voter approved 2006 $42 billion bond money is starting to get distributed to much needed infrastructure projects. Although there is much still to be released, at least this is a good start…
Public Works Construction, Regional Comparison To September
Public works construction in September 2008 was down 3.6 percent from the first nine months of 2007.
Year-to-date numbers for all new public building and heavy construction permits are:

The California construction employment forecast averaged 804,400 in September 2008, down 4,000 (0.5%) from August and down 76,700 (8.7%) from September 2007.
