The Construction Industry Research Board (CIRB) out of
Public Works
Public works construction in June 2008 totaled $2.1 billion, down 6.4% from last month, yet up 4.3% from June 2007. Public building in June fell 16% below May numbers and 8.4% from June 2007. Heavy construction was 6% higher than the previous month, and 21% higher than June 2007.
Major Public Works Projects Started
$137.1 million freeway bridge project in Placer County
$111 million high school project in Los Angeles County
$79 million UC project in San Diego County
$46.3 million water treatment plant project in San Diego County
$45.6 million CSU building project in Los Angeles County
$42.2 million elementary school project in Los Angeles County
$42 million community college project in Los Angeles County
$39.2 million expressway project in Inyo County
$30.4 million canal project in San Joaquin County
Public Works Construction Regional Comparisons
Public works construction in June 2008 showed a 4.9% gain over the first six months of 2007. Year-to-date figures for all new public building and heavy construction permits are $3.56 billion in LA-Orange-Ventura; $2.7 billion in Riverside-San Bernardino-San Diego; $2.1 billion in the Bay Area; $1.1 billion in the Sacramento Valley; $887 million in the San Joaquin Valley; $513 million along the Central Coast; and $506 million in the North State and Sierras.
Private, Nonresidential Construction 2007-2008 Comparisons
Private, nonresidential building permits totaled $1.67 billion in May, 21.6% lower than April and 17.5% lower than May 2007. Year-to-date volume is 4.4% lower than the first five months of 2007.
