No Deal Yet
August 18, 2008

It’s Monday, August 18, 2008. Do you know where your 2008-2009 State Budget is?  Neither do California legislators, because the compromise they were hoping to pass this weekend disappeared. As Associated Press reports, the Democrat’s desire to raise $6.6 billion in taxes on corporations and the wealthy was voted down on party lines: 45-30.

This is the eighth week without a State Budget. Governor Schwarzenegger has already signed into law that State employees (all 200,000 of them) will be paid the federal minimum wage of $6.55 per hour until the lawmakers pass a budget. Apparently, the Legislature is exempt from this rule.

So, this method of getting tough with the rule makers has gone over like a lead balloon with State workers. Why punish those who have no say and nothing to do with how these people carve out a Budget?

If anyone reading this has an idea about how to come up with a workable Budget solution, let us know. We’d love to forward your ideas on to the Governor’s office…

In the mean time, contractors who work with the State will have to keep paying their subcontractors, once the money in the pipeline of the previous budget runs out. Of course, they’ll get it all back when the Budget is approved—hopefully, soon.
