Back To The Drawing Board?
April 13, 2008

Well, here’s real monkey wrench that’s been thrown into the smog debate in California. Writer Mark Grossi of the Fresno Bee reports that the agricultural bread basket of California, the 25 thousand square mile Central Valley, is the biggest air polluter of all. In his words:

“An astonishing fact is buried in dirty-air data: (Central) Valley trees and plants produce far more hydrocarbons than vehicles do.

Valley plants, trees may add to pollution by emitting tons of a key smog element.

In the summer, crops, trees, lawns and the rest of nature release 360 tons daily of the key smog component. That's a whopping four times more hydrocarbons than from cars and trucks.”

Astonishing is a good word, here. Read the entire April 12, 2008 article “Mean Greens” at www.fresnobee.com
