Environmental Projects Highlight A Tribal Community
The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community, owners of Mystic Lake Casino, south of the Twin Cities, is going green with its recent construction projects. A green roof, (yes, with plants) was installed on the just completed Fire Station and complements the rainwater flow into existing ponds to be re-used.
The Community announced that next year, it will install a 15,000-square-foot parking lot using pervious concrete at what was Little Six Casino, across from Mystic Lake casino. In addition, it will ask contractors to build two rain gardens for water from impervious pavement to drain.
Currently, SMSC said water and melted snow on their parking lots flow into a storm sewer leading to a storm water pond, but the water probably contain contaminants from the pavement. SMSC Department of Land and Natural Resources said that using pervious concrete also recharges groundwater and the aquifer while reducing runoff. The Community is interested in balancing nature to keep plants and animals in their diverse settings.
SMSC leaders are looking at LEED certified buildings beginning next year. This shows what can happen in a small community that pays attention to the environment.
