The Chicago Spire Offers Many Special Interior Features
During a visit to Chicago last week, I had an opportunity to visit the sales center for The Chicago Spire, a 2,000-foot-tall twisting residential tower. I knew about The Spire's unique design, but the visit gave me a first-hand look at the special interior features of this building being developed by Shelbourne Development Group.
Foundation work is now proceeding for the 150-story structure at the intersection of the Chicago River and Lake Michigan. Designed by Spanish architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava, The Chicago Spire will be the world's tallest residential building and the tallest building in the western world upon completion in late 2011/early 2012.
The sales center, which overlooks the project site, is like no other. It is very impressive, encompassing the entire 18th floor of the NBC Tower with a total of 19,815 square feet of space. The center, designed to market residential units to buyers around the world, features outfitted units, including a Calatrava signature unit called a Gallery. Larger in size than a suite, the Gallery has a custom-designed circular bed enclosure with sliding glass doors to provide a separate sleeping area and wood wall panels to cover sections of ceiling.
Needless to say, the residences inside the twisting tower will be fabulous. None of the 1,194 units will be alike, but all will offer breathtaking views of Lake Michigan, the Chicago skyline and neighboring states. And the detailing throughout each unit will be amazing.
The homes feature 10-foot ceilings and windows combining vertical and trapezoidal glass panels, and utilize natural materials such as wide-plank herringbone hardwood floors, elegant granite, marble and onyx stone, crafted European cabinetry, integrated American and European appliances, and European plumbing fixtures.
In the residences I toured, the kitchens were fitted to the highest level of specification, with beautiful cabinetry and the latest appliance technology. And there was an abundance of space in the kitchen and living areas.
I love the units, and The Chicago Spire would be a wonderful place to live. However, I need to take another look inside my ever-empty wallet before moving forward with a purchase. The residences range in price from $750,000 for a one-bedroom unit to $40 million for a 10,293-square-foot duplex penthouse.
