ODOT Kicks Off Major Roadwork Projects
April 10, 2008
Ohioans can anticipate another busy construction season on their highways, with approximately 1,000 roadwork projects planned across the state. The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) has officially kicked off its 2008-2009 season, and the list of projects is quite impressive. Over the next year and a half, says ODOT Director James Beasley, the department will oversee $2.5 billion in construction contract awards -- the largest amount ever awarded in that time frame.
ODOT says 80 interstate construction projects are planned, totaling approximately $605 million. In addition, there will be 823 paving and rehabilitation projects on state and U.S. routes totaling more than $1.1 billion. So, there will be plenty of work for contractors and suppliers.
A $154.5-million reconstruction of Interstate 75 in Warren County will be the largest state project. And another mammoth project planned is the modernization of State Route 2 along Lake Erie in northern Ohio.
Meanwhile, massive construction continues in the Dayton area with the upgrading and modernization of I-75. Highlights of this multi-phase project include reconstruction of the I-75/State Route 4 interchange, and realignment and widening of I-75 between Riverview Avenue and Leo Street.
In central Ohio, 54 projects -- interstate construction projects, resurfacing, paving, and bridge preservation -- are planned with a total investment by the state of $350 million. ODOT District 6, based in Delaware, says the 2008-2009 construction season includes the completion of central Ohio's single largest construction project, reconstruction of the State Route 161 interchanges at I-270 and Sunbury Road. Also, an $18-million investment is being made on seven bridges in Morrow County in anticipation of adding a third lane to I-71.
In Union County, District 6 notes that construction will begin in the fall to reconfigure and upgrade the U.S. 33/State Route 161/Post Road interchange. This $28-million project includes relocation of ramps and other improvements.
In addition, work is underway -- through the efforts of several partners -- to ease congestion at Port Columbus International Airport. The International Gateway Project involves relocating a road and building several bridges at a cost of $30 million.
