Riding The Wave Of New Arenas
August 23, 2008
The wave of new sports arenas continues to rise in the Midwest, and that's great news for contractors. The new Lucas County Arena is quickly taking shape in downtown Toledo, OH, with completion scheduled in fall 2009; and Louisville, KY, is proceeding with plans for a $252-million downtown arena to serve as the new home of the University of Louisville's basketball teams.
Also, the University of Akron's new football stadium is under construction in Akron, OH. Construction of the stadium and field -- named InfoCision Stadium and Summa Field, respectively -- is scheduled to be completed for the Zips' home opener in September 2009.
Meanwhile, new arenas could possibly pop up in Lexington, KY, and Evansville, IN, in the near future if plans come to fruition. The University of Kentucky is considering a major overhaul of its athletic facilities, a move that would include replacing the famous Rupp Arena in downtown Lexington. According to a report, the school and the Lexington Center Corp. -- which operates Rupp Arena -- have given approval to a sports marketing company to conduct a financial feasibility study on the projects.
In Evansville, the city's redevelopment commission has approved hiring three consulting firms to study the possible construction of a downtown arena to replace aging Roberts Stadium, the 11,600-seat home for University of Evansville basketball. London Witte Group, Indianapolis, has been selected as the financial consultant. London Witte will analyze the cost and revenue estimates for an arena that were prepared by The Gateway Group. HOK Sport has been chosen as Evansville's design consultant, and Hunt Construction Group will act as construction consultant, developing cost estimates and anticipated schedules, and otherwise serving as a resource to the city on all construction-related matters.
Evansville is evaluating the feasibility of a new multipurpose arena, and will seek input and analysis on what should be built; what are the advantages and challenges of potential building sites; when could an arena be completed; and what the cost would be. In addition, the availability of parking and traffic flow will be reviewed. Eight downtown sites are being studied as possible locations for the new arena.
