Sewer History Revealed!

Posted by Steve Hudson on May 6, 2008

Interesting times, these. Turn on the radio, and they’re talking about primary elections and gas tax holidays, about rising food prices and foreclosures, and about pilots who take little naps while they’re driving airplanes up there in the sky. It’s all enough to make a body worry.

Well, when the worries get to you, what better relief than to take ...Read More

The Gas Tax Holiday Conundrum

Posted by Steve Hudson on April 30, 2008

Being in the words business, I like uncommon words - words that get used just now and then – words like “conundrum.” It’s got several definitions, and most dictionaries list one of them as “anything that puzzles” or "something that is a dilemma.”

That’s what we’ve got with the gas tax holiday. Lots...Read More

Mike Evans, chairman of Georgia’s State Transportation Board, created (how to put it) a bit of a stir yesterday when he announced that he is resigning from the board because of a personal relationship with GDOT Commissioner Gena Abraham.

Thinking About Work Zone Safety

Posted by Steve Hudson on April 7, 2008

A few days ago we made a little road trip to see Eldest Son in one of his concerts. A sophomore in college, he’s a clarinet performance major – and fortunately he’s close enough that we can often make it to his performances.

We like to leave early, since the route between here and there takes us through a number of construction zones. We are also careful to watch the speed limits within the construction zones.

Shaping The Future Of Highway Construction In Southwest Georgia

Posted by Steve Hudson on April 2, 2008

If planning is good, then advance planning is even better. For example, planning means I'm setting up a fishing trip, but advance planning means I'll be sure to put my waders and my reel in the truck before I depart.
Don't ask me how I know this is important.
Planning is important when it comes to highway construction too. In the past, a lot of that sort of planning has been done "somewhere else." But more and more these days, we're seeing state DOTs and other agencies working proactively to involve local or regional communities in planning the transportation projects that will affect them.

More Talk About Green

Posted by Steve Hudson on March 31, 2008

Last time we talked about the greening of Chamblee, Ga., but interest in green construction is showing up elsewhere in the state too. One of the latest places to go green is the Georgia Ports Authority', where green was a factor in the recently completed Container Berth 2 Upgrade. Green elements included use of recycled material and shifts to equipment which uses more green-friendly fuels.

"These projects will increase capacity, improve efficiency and the ...Read More

Is Green Good For The Green?

Posted by Steve Hudson on March 27, 2008

Though Saint Patrick’s Day 2008 is now a thing of the past, “green” continues to be a key word on the construction scene. Case in point: the city of Chamblee, Ga., recently became the first municipality in the United States to formally recognize the Green Building Initiative’s (GBI) Green Globes environmental assessment and rating system.

Chamblee’s City Council voted unanimously in favor of the idea. The result: Beginning April 1, 2009, in Chamblee, all new construction projects of m...Read More

Association involvement -- a good thing!

Posted by Steve Hudson on March 25, 2008

Outside, everything is starting to bloom – a clear sign that it’s baseball season again. Will this be the year that the Braves go all the way to the top?

Being at the top is good if you're a baseball team.

It's good to be at the top if you're a contractor too. It means more work, more profit, better employee retention, and on and on and on.

Being at the top is also good if you're a construction trade association. Just ask the folks over at the Georgia Branch, Associated General Contractors – a chapter that has just been honored as the AGC of America 2007 Chapter of the Year. The Georgia Bran

Ain't Technology Wonderful?

Posted by Steve Hudson on February 6, 2008

So it really is a brave new world out there. Technology is changing the way we do everything, including managing construction businesses and keeping track of sheepdogs.

You probably already know about managing construction, but odds are you're not quite on top of the subject of managing sheepdogs. So I'll bring you up to speed.

Chester
the resident sheepdog, brave soul that he is, recently consented (more or less) to allow his doggy self to be secretly and surreptitiously labelled with one of those neat little ID chips that are supposed to make lost dogs a thing of the past. And he thought he was just going in to get a little trimming and brushing. Fooled him!

Afterwards, on the way back to the car, as he sat there in the fron...Read More
