As you know, the Georgia Department of Transportation has been much in the news of late. You know, it's all that excitement about the commissioner.
But there’s a lot more going on at GDOT than that, and one thing that’s especially relevant relates to the implications of the stimulus package. In fact, GDOT has unveiled its own “stimulus Web site,” which provides what the department is calling “provide information regarding

While traveling hither and thither around the Dixie Contractor territory, one thing I like to do is listen to AM radio. That usually means “talk” radio, and THAT usually means a buffet of opinion, some good, some – well – some different.
Yesterday, while driving south on I-75, I got the chance to listen to a talk show w...Read More

There’s much excitement today down at the Georgia Department of Transportation. The reason? Thursday’s firing of GDOT Commissioner Gena Evans.
The State Transportation Board voted 9-3 to remove Evans, who had served in the commissioner’s office for less than two years.

First, let me thank everyone for the thousands of letters of condolence and comfort following my recent bout with no internet or email service.
Well, hundreds of letters anyway.
Or at least dozens. Certainly dozens!

Computers, as you know, are wonderful tools for communicating quickly and for getting info out there in a hurry.
That is, as long as everything is working.
This week has been another of those weeks, computer-wise, here at Hacienda Hudson. For some reason the flow of information wasn’t flowing. Email wasn’t email...Read More

So I’m eating lunch today with a contractor – one who’s been around the industry a long, long time. He knows the barbecue places, and this one is a good one. In fact, I do believe it was some of be best pork barbecue I’ve had in quite a while.
Anyway, we soon got to talking about the economic recovery plan, a.k.a. bail-out bill, a.k.a. free money program, a.k.a. jobs creation program, etc. and etc. and etc. Which “a.k.a.” you choose kind of depends on where you sit in relation to the political fence, it seems. Everybody has...Read More

Even as many are singing the economic blues, and others are taking a wait-and-see attitude on how things are going to play out in Washington, the folks down in Garden City, GA (that’s just a stone’s throw from Savannah) are looking down the road and making plans.
Apparently, the economic bad news isn’t getting them down. Good for them!
"We're delighted to announce the fact that we are moving our city center, with the unanimous support...Read More

So how much do you really rely on that trusty computer sitting there on your desk?
The old saying is that you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone, and here at Hacienda Hudson this week every last scrap of connectivity (including not only the internet and email but phone service and just about every other electronic portal to the rest of the world, including every smidgen of cable TV) disappeared. Trouble in “the system,” they told us. That’s what happens when you start ...Read More

If you’ve got kids in school, you’ll understand when I say that this time of year (when they go back to school) is a time of mixed feelings.
On the one hand, it’s “bravo!” time – and one reason, at least here at Hacienda Hudson, is that the return of school days means a dramatic drop in the weekly food bill. You see, if the kids are back in school, then they (and all their buddies) are not here eating us out of house and home. That means that th...Read More

Even though I’m on vacation, I put everything else aside this morning and turned on the computer because it’s blog writing time. Hey, it’s my duty. You see, here in the high pressure world of modern construction journalism, we editor types use the space-age miracle of the Internet to write about things with an immediacy and urgency heretofore unseen. It’s neat. I write it, it appears instantly, and you drop whatever you’re doing to read what I wrote.
