Exploring 60 Years Of Lifting
July 15, 2008

Years ago, back when I had more hair and less waist, I found myself torn between a number compelling career goals.

One of them, which I don’t think I’ve mentioned to you before, was to be a world-famous historian and archaeologist– you know, one of those Indiana Jones sorts who digs into the past and finds all sorts of things and unearths great gobs of treasure and even has his own line of action figures and lunchboxes.

Yes, that could have been me. But all the good Indiana Jones jobs were taken, so now I’m writing about construction instead.

However, I’m still into history. I can spend hours in a museum. I’ll even spend an entire Saturday, dawn to dark, tracking down some elusive historic site.

And when the museums are closed or it’s too cold to take to the field, I love to get lost in history books.

Yes, I admit it. History books are my thing.

So you can imagine my response when a package arrived earlier this week – a package bringing a hot-off-the-press copy of “Lifting And Moving The World,” a new hardcover, coffee table publication from the Specialized Carriers & Rigging Association.

This year, SC&RA is celebrating its 60th year – and this volume, published as part of the anniversary celebration, takes a look at lifting technology and the development of SC&RA from the 1940s (when SC&RA’s forerunner, the Heavy Haulers, Machinery Movers and Erectors Section of the Local Cartage National Conference, was born) all the way up to today.

This volume also includes histories and profiles of many crane rental, rigging and specialized transport companies, as well as histories of many manufacturers and specialized service providers that are active in this segment of the industry.

There’s more, too, including a year-by-year listing of SC&RA’s Rigging Job of the Year and Hauling Job of the Year award recipients, as well as similar listings of other award winners.

If you’re interested in history, too – or if you just want to see how a key part of our industry got to where it is today – you’ll want to take a look at this book too. You can find out how to get a copy of your own by contacting the Specialized Carriers & Ritting Association at (703) 698-0291.
