Airport Work Adds Up
July 18, 2008

Governor Doyle recently approved a number of projects ranging from $22,000 to $9.7 million for work at 20 airports around the state.

Although some of the projects are relatively small, the total of all the projects represents about $21.2 million in various kinds of work, including designing new terminals, building hangars, adding lighting, improving stormwater systems, and building or resurfacing runways, taxiways, aprons, and other pavement.

The beneficiary airports range from the largest, like Milwaukee and Dane County, to the smaller, like Manitowish Waters and Rice Lake. And while the larger airports tended to get the larger amounts, the project at the Shell Lake Airport is worth $1.7 million.

The largest dollar amounts were $9.7 million at Dane County, $3.5 million at Milwaukee, $2.2 million at Outagamie County, and the previously mentioned $1.7 million at Shell Lake.

One of the beauties of this work is that about $18.7 million of the $21.2 million total value of the projects is coming from the Federal Aviation Administration. About $1.2 million is coming from state funds and about $1.3 million from the areas served by the airports.

If only the federal government would see the value in funding highway work at the same percentage …

What do you think?
