PASADENA, CA C.W. Driver Companies broke ground on the new $82 million Science and Innovation building at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH). The 91,000-square-foot project is scheduled to complete in the winter of 2020.
"Science and technology centers have become a major differentiator for colleges across the country, as a new wave of students look for innovative programs that prepare them for careers in science, technology, engineering and math," said Tom Jones, Project Executive at C.W. Driver Companies. "We are thrilled to work with CSU Dominguez Hills, a school on the cutting edge of STEM curriculum, on a project that allows us to apply our deep-rooted expertise in higher education construction to meet the needs of students pursuing these fields."
The project will achieve LEED Gold Certification or greater, and include laboratories, faculty offices, classrooms and facilities for new graduate programs through the CSUDH College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences. Funded by a $4 million gift from Toyota USA, the building's Toyota Center for Innovation in STEM Education will include a fabrication lab, K-12 teacher demonstration and training labs, SMART classrooms, collaborative work spaces and outdoor work areas.
"A facility of this quality and potential will significantly elevate our university's standing as a comprehensive and inclusive teaching and research institution, while our faculty, students and the teachers and young learners in our partner schools reap the benefits of all it has to offer," said CSUDH President Willie J. Hagan. "With C.W. Driver's construction expertise, CSUDH will have a beautiful, highly functional and ultra-modern instructional and research facility that will pay dividends to our local communities and industries for generations to come."
