Thomopulos Retires from Stanley Consultants

MUSCATINE, IA Gregs Thomopulos, an icon in the consulting engineering industry, is retiring from Stanley Consultants as Chairman of the Board, concluding a career that spanned more than 50 years with the company. Headquartered in Muscatine, Iowa, since 1913, Stanley Consultants provides engineering, environmental and construction services worldwide.

Thomopulos joined Stanley Consultants upon graduation from the University of Kansas in 1965 as an engineering intern, working that summer and the next at the company's headquarters in Muscatine, Iowa. He started full time employment in January 1967, following completion of his master's degree at the University of California, Berkeley. 

He worked for the firm internationally for 10 years before returning to its corporate headquarters to head the International Division. In that position, he was responsible for all operations outside the United States, an assignment that took him to more than 35 countries in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and the Caribbean, overseeing the design and construction of infrastructure, energy, and environmental projects.

He was elected President of the firm in 1987, a position he held for 20 years before being elected Chairman of the Board in 2007. During the period of his leadership of the firm, Stanley Consultants reached new heights in terms of reputation, revenue and profitability, making it a formidable contender in the global arena.

Thomopulos also played a leadership role in the consulting engineering industry both in the United States and worldwide. He served as President of the International Federation of Consulting Engineers, which is the global association of consulting engineering firms, based in Geneva, Switzerland, and as Chair of the American Council of Engineering Companies, based in Washington, D.C.

Thomopulos serves on several nonprofit boards and committees including the Board of Goodwill Industries of Southeast Iowa, the University of Iowa Foundation Board, the University of Kansas Endowment Association Board, the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure and several others. He also served as a member of the U.S. Department of State Overseas Building Operations Industry Advisory Panel.

Throughout the course of his illustrious career, Thomopulos received many national honors and awards including the Distinguished Engineering Service Award from the National Society of Professional Engineers and the Outstanding Projects and Leaders Lifetime Achievement in Management Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers.
