APWA recognizes Mercer Corridor Improvements Project as National Project of the Year
SEATTLE, WA CH2M is a part of the national award-winning Mercer Corridor Improvements Project, partnering to create a more connected, vibrant and sustainable city.
Honored for its excellence in public works project management, administration, and delivery team alliance, the Mercer Corridor Improvements Project (East Phase) was selected as a national award winner by the American Public Works Association (APWA) in the transportation category - $25 million to $75 million. This award reflects the commitment and partnership among the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT), CH2M as the prime consultant for the environmental planning and final design, Gary Merlino Construction as the prime contractor, and HNTB as the construction manager.
"I am honored by APWA's national recognition and proud of the entire team responsible for delivering one of the largest, transformational projects in Seattle's history," said Angela Brady, SDOT's Mercer Corridor Project Manager. "The Mercer Corridor not only improves vital regional transportation needs, but it has provided new, state-of-the-art multi-modal access within the rapidly expanding South Lake Union community where none existed before."
The Mercer Corridor is a critical part of Seattle, Washington's, City Center strategy to create vibrant, livable, walkable mixed-use communities within easy access to the downtown core. The street plan includes a mile of new bike lanes, six blocks of a multi-use trail, 21 curb bulbs, 32 block faces of improved and widened sidewalks, upgraded pedestrian crossings at 12 intersections, and median and landscaping that contributes to a sense of place and enhanced safety.
"It's extremely gratifying to be acknowledged by APWA and to be a key partner with SDOT in designing and delivering this "˜Complete Streets' solution to one of Seattle's most significant transportation challenges," said CH2M Project Manager Roger Mason. "Since 2004, beginning with the environmental analysis and design, our team has been working to achieve the right balance for all modes across this corridor, while pushing the limits on sustainability. The Mercer Corridor stands as a testament to CH2M's brand promise of breathing fresh life and energy into every community we touch."
