PHOENIX, AZ The employees of EMCOR, University Mechanical & Engineering Contractors, Inc., the University of Arizona, DPR Construction, Sundt Construction, Inc., Joint Venture, and more than 100 other participants donned EMCOR Pink Hard Hats and assembled to form EMCOR's signature giant human pink ribbon in a "Call to Action" in support of breast cancer awareness. Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, a breast cancer survivor, was in attendance and participated in the event.
"Breast cancer affects over 200,000 women in the U.S. each year," said Justice O'Connor. "Everyone must be an advocate for their own healthcare and early detection cannot be overstated. I am honored to join this effort today and continue to increase awareness, hope and survivorship of this deadly disease."
Justice O'Connor was congratulated for her 35th anniversary as the first woman appointed to the Supreme Court in October 1981 and recognized for her survivorship of breast cancer.
"Early screening for breast cancer and advances in detection help saves lives; but the first step is raising awareness," said Councilwoman Kate Gallego, whose district is home to the UA College of Medicine - Phoenix. "The citizens of District 8 have seen great impact from these partners with the development of this campus, dedicated efforts in the advancement of biomedical education and the creation of permanent jobs. The city of Phoenix has also pledged its commitment to raising awareness [of breast cancer] and is very proud to be part of this significant initiative."
Judy Bernas, AVP of University Relations - Phoenix at the University of Arizona, David Elrod, Regional Manager at DPR, and David Crawford, President & CEO of Sundt were presented with a commemorative Pink Hart Hat plaque to honor and recognize the support of their organizations in the effort to promote breast cancer awareness.
"The University of Arizona is pleased to team up with EMCOR and the "ËœProtect Yourself.' Campaign," said Judy Bernas. "This is a truly memorable experience for our partnership as we continue our investment in local economic benefits and world-changing advancements. As Arizona's premier research university, the focus on prevention is critical to saving lives and strengthening health care for the Arizona community."
