ABILENE, TX Carl L. Johnson, PE, has been selected to lead TxDOT's Abilene District as District Engineer. Johnson fills the position left by Stan Swiatek, PE, who recently was appointed District Engineer for TxDOT's Waco District.

As District Engineer, Johnson oversees the planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of state transportation for the district's 13 counties. He joined the Abilene District from the Brownwood District, where he served as Director of Operations for five years.

He has held various roles throughout his TxDOT career, which began in the Brownwood District's Lampasas Area Office where he was involved in construction, design and survey work. In 2001 he became an engineering assistant with the district's operations office, and also has held positions of district maintenance and traffic engineer, and engineering supervisor.

In 1990 Johnson began his construction and engineering career with Austin Bridge Co. in the design office producing concrete formwork design, beam erection schemes, surveying layouts and various engineering functions supporting field operations. When the company merged into Austin Bridge & Road, Inc. he moved to field operations as a project engineer/surveyor and superintendent for small projects.  In 1994 he was a field engineer and surveyor with Prater Equipment Co. before joining TxDOT in 1995.

Johnson holds a bachelor's degree in construction engineering technology from Texas Tech University and obtained his professional engineer license in 2007.
