SANTA ANA, CA Iteris, Inc., the global leader in applied informatics for transportation and agriculture, has been awarded a $1.5 million contract for a traffic-signal upgrade project from the city of Abilene, Texas.

Iteris will upgrade 63 intersections with new equipment, including a wireless broadband-radio communications system that will provide faster communications throughout Abilene and increase the city's ability to respond to citizen concerns more quickly. Additionally, the system will allow city traffic technicians to respond to problems remotely, saving the city time and money by reducing the need to drive to intersections and enabling them to resolve issues more quickly and improve safety.

"Iteris is pleased to continue to provide design, construction and integration solutions for the City of Abilene," said Todd Kreter, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Roadway Sensors at Iteris. "This turnkey solution will result in an accelerated schedule and a streamlined implementation of transportation management solutions, improving mobility in the community and moving the city one step further in their smart city journey."

In addition to the system design and integration services, upgrades will include Iteris' advanced vehicle detection systems including VantageNext® and Vantage Vector® (a hybrid detection system that utilizes video and radar); a city-wide wireless broadband radio communications network; new traffic signal controllers; new traffic signal control cabinets; and managed Ethernet switches that allow the wireless communications to be shared by all of the hardware systems.
