POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — Modjeski and Masters, a bridge engineering firm, announces its selection for the rehabilitation of two vertical-lift bridges over the Erie Canal from the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT).
As the prime consultant on this contract, Modjeski and Masters will provide a full inspection of all structural, mechanical and electrical components for these two “towerless” vertical-lift bridges. The first bridge carries NY Route 19 over the Erie Canal in Brockport, New York, and the second carries NY Route 98 over the Erie Canal in Albion, New York. The rehabilitation project will update the original bridges, built between 1911 and 1915, to best serve the nearly 5.8 million passenger trips across them each year.
“The Erie Canal is one of New York’s greatest developments, so we’re privileged to be selected for this project by the NYSDOT to extend the life of these structures for years to come,” said Quentin Johnson, PE, Vice President of Modjeski and Masters. “Our team has worked on a multitude of bridges across the state of New York and understands both the practical and cultural impact of these structures for the community.”
Structural work as part of this contract will include load rating the trusses, replacement or strengthening of select truss bottom chord elements, and full replacement of the floor systems. For both bridges, Modjeski and Masters will overhaul all mechanical and electrical equipment including the lifting mechanism components and control systems.
This contract continues Modjeski and Masters’ work with NYSDOT, including on-going design contracts on NYSDOT’s only suspension bridge and the replacement of a railroad swing span over the Hudson River. Construction for this contract is estimated to be $6 million.
