SAN JOSE, CA Calvac Paving, a full service asphalt repair and concrete maintenance company based in San Jose, California, recently finished a complete rehabilitation of a parking lot in Redwood Shores. Jim Adam, President of Calvac Paving, posted a blog about the project on the company's website.
As Adam noted, the parking lot project at Redwood Shores combined technology and traditional techniques to deliver a great result that not only looks good, but was also completed quickly and more efficiently than conventional paving methodology.
The 63,500-square-foot parking lot was old, cracked and weathered, Adam noted, but it did not require a full removal and replacement. This property belonged to a client of Victor Cantando, Calvac's Vice President, so Adam assessed the parking lot and found that it perfectly fit the criteria for a specific application called a Petromat overlay.
"Petromat is a non-woven reinforcing fabric that is applied using a liquid asphalt binder, which works as a penetrating adhesive and moisture barrier," Adam said, adding that the Petromat fabric helps to retard the existing cracks from reflecting through the new asphalt surface and gives the finished surface a higher tensile strength, thereby distributing the weight of heavy truck traffic over a greater area.
Because of the unique considerations and time constraints of the job, Calvac Paving recommended a 2-inch Petromat overlay over the entire parking lot.
"This offered the best results for the budget and gave them similar benefits to getting a brand-new parking lot for years to come, without the hassle, expense and lost time of a complete remove and replace," Adam said.
During the project, Calvac Paving also designed a new layout for regular and ADA parking stalls. This included enlarging some stalls to prevent door dings.
Adam said he welcomes anyone to drive by Redwood Shores and check out the completed project, as well as call the company for information about their own asphalt and concrete-related needs.
