“We are excited that the TPC included these vital projects in its 2045 Regional Transportation Plan,” said Highway 36A Coalition Co-Chairman Jeremy Heath. “It is vital that we continue the planning process for this important mobility corridor.”
HGAC Transportation Director Craig Raborn told TPC members that the amendments, outlining a northern and southern segment for the proposed corridor, contained language that reiterated HGAC’s commitment to avoiding any impacts on the Katy Prairie Conservancy’s land holdings.
“The recommendation was that approval for this project for the HGAC and TPC be consistent with a resolution the TPC passed back in 2014 to develop an alternative that avoids adverse impacts to land controlled by the Katy Prairie Conservancy,” Raborn said.
The Highway 36A Coalition’s board and other local groups and government bodies had passed resolutions supporting the proposed 36A amendments prior to the recent meeting.
The Texas Department of Transportation currently is conducting an ongoing study looking at potential routes for the proposed project. TxDOT recently split the study to analyze two segments of independent utility, a northern and southern route for 36A.
Residential and commercial growth, particularly in Fort Bend County but also elsewhere, threatens to close off route options, so it is essential that 36A planning and development occurs sooner rather than later. In addition, Port Freeport’s recent groundbreaking on its Port Freeport Harbor Channel Improvement Project clears the way for Port Freeport to become the deepest port on the Gulf Coast, which will increase port traffic and freight traffic and produce more demand for freight and mobility options.
