After more than 40 years, the hydraulics business is booming and none could be the wiser than Owner Anthony Halvatzes.

New Hampshire Hydraulics, Inc. first opened its doors in 1978 in a small garage that housed just two employees. Today, this fast-paced and ever-expanding business has grown to 45 employees – many of whom have been with the company for 20 to 30 or more years.

After graduating from high school in 1968, Halvatzes joined the Army as a strategic radar repairman. When discharged in 1972, he bought and ran a restaurant, but after four years sold that business.

At the time, Halvatzes’ father-in-law, Al Poliquin, owned and operated a one-man hydraulic jack repair shop.

“I was between jobs so I decided to return to mechanical repair and troubleshooting,” Halvatzes said. “My father-in-law and I decided to build a new shop so the two of us started New Hampshire Hydraulics in 1978. I found there was a tremendous need for reliable quality repairs in the hydraulic repair marketplace. That type of demand continues to this day.”

Steady Growth
The business quickly grew to include the repair of all sorts of hydraulic components including hydraulic cylinders, pumps, motors, and valves. In 1995, due to the steady increase in the volume of business, Halvatzes decided it was time to expand.

“After going to three shifts at the original shop in Merrimack, New Hampshire, we found and purchased our current Merrimack facility,” Halvatzes said. “The 10,000-square-foot facility accommodated the growing list of employees and the various new pieces of machinery required to perform the hydraulic repairs which have fueled our growth over the years. We also expanded the sales of new hydraulic components such as multi-stage dump body cylinders.”

Halvatzes’ son, TJ, joined the business as a teenager doing various jobs after school and on weekends to help out in the shop. TJ then came on full-time after high school.
“He has learned the business hands-on and has become an invaluable part of our management team and is currently Vice President of Operations,” Halvatzes said.

TJ will take over the business one day when Anthony Halvatzes decides to retire. Over the years, other family members have been employed in various roles at New Hampshire Hydraulics as well.

A Long-Awaited Expansion
“By 2017, we realized that we had once again outgrown the space we were in so we committed to adding an additional 10,000 square feet of shop to bring our facility to a total of 20,000 plus square feet,” Halvatzes said.

The new addition broke ground in December of 2017 and was completed by the fall of 2018.

“It was a long time coming”, said Halvatzes. “We needed more room to grow and to be able to continue to take care of our customers. We wanted to be able to add more machinery and other capabilities. We needed to stock new components and allow for a larger distribution of new and remanufactured components as well. We also added more hydraulic grade raw materials so that when we have an item we need to make we have the materials right here and ready to go.”

The Best Solution for Any Hydraulic Need
Today, company employees are made up of hydraulic specialists, technicians, machinists, fabricators, and engineers. This team of experts build and repair all types of hydraulic components. The company sells or repairs industrial equipment cylinders, pumps, motors, valves, and accumulators. Also available are NFPA (National Fluid Power Association) tie-rod cylinders.

The heavy equipment cylinder repair list includes repacks, new chrome rods, re-chroming, new barrels, glands, piston heads, in house machining, honing, welding, fabrication and more. The company specializes in large bore/long stroke cylinders.

“Because we are an independent dealer of multiple product lines and are not tied to one brand or another, we can offer the best solution to any hydraulic problem or need,” Halvatzes said. “We utilize raw materials to make parts. We can also save our customers money and we hydraulically test and warrant all repairs.”

New Hampshire Hydraulics has sales people in the field that travel all over New England and parts of New York providing free pick-up and delivery of new and repaired hydraulic components.

“We have seven sales people on the road and four drivers that will meet them to transfer equipment,” said Sales Manager, Kevin Peverly, who has been with the company for 31 years. “We have a fleet of vehicles that includes pick-up trucks, flat bed trailers and one international boom truck. Offering free pick-up and delivery and free estimates is how we built the business.”

Peverly pointed out that every component that comes in for repair is fully evaluated. Before any work is started, an estimate is provided as to what it would take to bring each item to like new condition. Any available options, failure analysis and suggestions are also given to the customer.

“If the company cannot repair it economically, we will offer a new replacement or other resources, with no obligation and return it at no charge,” Peverly said.

The highly capable staff, coupled with the enormous stock of hydraulic grade materials and parts, allows the company to fabricate many damaged parts quickly and economically while saving time and money.

“We are a fast-moving shop,” said Welder Jeff Hornor, who has been with the company for 30 years.

With plenty of extra room, workers can take advantage of the spacious area that includes a fabrication shop, machine shop, mechanic shop, honing and polishing shop, and more. When an item first reaches the shop, it is cleaned in a designated steam cleaning area. Before an item leaves the shop, an item is painted and arrives back to the customer looking like new.

New Hampshire Hydraulics is a warehouse distributor for Custom Hoists telescopic dump-body cylinders. They offer hydraulic and hydrostatic pumps, motors and valves that can be new, a remanufactured exchange or rebuilt in house. The company is also a dealer for Montabert hydraulic hammers and attachments as well as the Microblaster – a revolutionary rock and concrete breaking kit.

“Together with my son TJ and our newly expanded facility, we are taking New Hampshire Hydraulics to the next level. With more capabilities and quicker turnaround times, I can see the continued success of our company,” Halvatzes said.
