BELLEVUE, WA — Don Nguyen, PE, ENV SP, STP2, was recently honored as one of the top young engineers in the nation by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Nguyen was named a recipient of this year’s Edmund Friedman Young Engineer Award for Professional Achievement. The award goes to no more than five recipients each year and is the highest individual honor designated for an ASCE member 35 or younger.

Bethy Clark, Senior Bridge Engineer who nominated Nguyen for the award, called him an “outstanding engineer.” Clark herself was a recipient of the award in 2015.

“Don has never once let me down,” she said, “and I’m continually impressed by what he is able to accomplish.”

Nguyen joined HDR last year and works in the Bellevue, Washington, office, where he is the Deputy Project Manager on the redesign of the $12-million Marion Street Pedestrian Bridge in downtown Seattle. The current, aging bridge is used by millions of pedestrians each year and is being redesigned as part of the city’s major waterfront makeover.

Nguyen has also been involved in community and professional advancement work, including mentorship of younger engineers, outreach to local high schools and a trip to Panama with Bridges to Prosperity.

“It’s important to give back to the community,” Nguyen said, “so I’ve always been willing to say yes to opportunities that come up.”

This national award is just the latest in a string of honors for Nguyen. Earlier this year he was named Outstanding Younger Member in ASCE Activities at the Western Region Younger Member Council. He was also named the Young Engineer of the Year in 2017 by the Puget Sound Engineering Council, among others.

The Edmund Friedman Young Engineer Award for Professional Achievement recognizes professional contributions of young members of ASCE and was officially instituted in October 1972. Each year, ASCE honors young professionals who have attained significant professional achievement in the industry through this award. This year, the awards will be presented October 10-13 at the ASCE annual convention in Miami, Florida.
