SABINE PASS, TX — Port Arthur LNG broke ground for the relocation and upgrade of approximately 3.5 miles of State Highway 87, between the Intercoastal Waterway and Keith Lake Pass that extends to the community of Sabine Pass, Texas, where the Port Arthur LNG export project will be located. As part of the relocation, the city of Port Arthur’s water lines to Sabine Pass will also be upgraded.

“We are excited to commence construction on this critical infrastructure for Southeast Texas as we continue the development of our Port Arthur LNG project,” said Michael VanderMate, Vice President of Engineering and Construction for Sempra LNG. “Upgrading and moving the highway will greatly reduce impacts from erosion and flooding and will provide a safer route away from the waterway for Sabine Pass residents. This project is a start to the thousands of jobs and other economic benefits that Port Arthur LNG intends to bring to Texas.”

The new highway segment will follow the route of Entergy’s existing steel transmission lines and will be built to Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) standards. Once the construction is completed in 2021, the highway will be donated to the state of Texas.

Among the attendees at the groundbreaking ceremony were Dade Phelan, Texas State Representative, District 21; Jeff Branick, Jefferson County Judge; Kristi Heid, Sabine Pass School Superintendent; and representatives from the city of Port Arthur and TxDOT.

“Thank you, Sempra LNG, for moving forward on the relocation of Highway 87 in south Jefferson County,” Branick said. “The upgraded portion of the highway will provide safe travel to and from the Sabine Pass area for residents and the many tourists that visit our coastal areas for recreation and employment.”

Sempra is developing the Port Arthur LNG export project in Jefferson County. The project is expected to include two liquefaction trains, up to three LNG storage tanks and associated facilities that will enable the export of approximately 11 million tonnes per annum of LNG to world markets.
