Skanska and Evergreen Public Schools Break Ground on Replacement of Mountain View High School

VANCOUVER, WA — Skanska and Evergreen School District No. 114 together recently celebrated the groundbreaking of the school district’s new Mountain View High School in Vancouver, Washington. Evergreen selected Skanska as its general contractor and construction manager (GC/CM) to replace the current school and athletic fields on the 41-acre site.

This new Clark County school will be constructed with its future 2,000 students in mind. “The groundbreaking actually marks the half-way point in this four-year replacement project,” said Evergreen Public Schools’ Executive Director of Facilities Susan Steinbrenner. “We were fortunate through the GC/CM process to have Skanska start with us from the beginning as part of our talented team of architects, designers, engineers, and project managers. We look forward to a brand-new Mountain View High School opening in the fall of 2022.”

“It is truly exciting to be part of this project in the community where I live,” said Trevor Wyckoff, Skanska’s Vice President and Account Manager overseeing the project. “We’ve been working with the Evergreen School District, R&C Management, and LSW Architects for the past 18 months, and soon the community will see the building take shape as we move ahead with construction.”

Wyckoff also led the team to construct Woodland (Washington) High School, which opened in fall 2015, the modernization of Portland’s Franklin High School, which opened in fall 2017, and the recently completed Sherwood High School, Oregon’s largest high school by area.

The current Mountain View High School was built 41 years ago. The new $156-million, 276,000-square-foot high school is designed to address campus safety and security and will have a more compact footprint to include two- and three-story classroom wings, a gymnasium, auditorium, kitchen and cafeteria, media center, front offices, support space, collaboration areas, and specialty instructional spaces. The site, to be fully completed in December 2022, will have a new football field, new tennis courts, and a new track and field facility, as well as two new baseball and two new softball fields. The site’s redevelopment will include extended onsite queueing areas to reduce congestion in the neighborhood.

The new high school is part of a nearly $1-billion investment in the Evergreen school district via a 2018 voter-approved bond measure totaling $695 million, plus state-generated matching funds and impact fees.

Skanska also worked with Evergreen Public Schools in 2012-13 to deliver the Henrietta Lacks Health and Bioscience High School and Crestline Elementary School, both in Vancouver. “We are excited about starting construction on the new Mountain View High School,” Wyckoff said. “It’s extremely rewarding to be a part of these projects which enrich and strengthen this community for generations.”
