BALTIMORE, MD — Stantec recently received a National Recognition Award in the American Council of Engineering Companies' (ACEC) 2022 Engineering Excellence Awards (EEA) competition for a project in Baltimore, Maryland. The annual competition recognizes engineering firms for projects that demonstrate an exceptional degree of innovation, complexity, achievement, and value. A total of 195 projects across the nation were recognized at the Awards Gala in Washington, D.C.

Stantec provided comprehensive inspection engineering services, a load rating and coatings evaluation, and studies for rehabilitation versus replacement for a deteriorating bridge in Baltimore that was originally built in 1907. After the decision was made to replace the bridge, it was important to consider the urban setting of Edmondson Avenue as well as the bridge's historic value. Other challenges included adjacent historic row houses, a trail/bike path, Gwynns Falls, a railway, and a cemetery.

The design team gained consensus with various stakeholders and the public by providing timely and informative coordination — which was critical to the project's success. The reconstructed bridge, designed by Stantec, incorporates architectural arch facades to recognize the historic nature of the original structure and provides a safe and secure structure for commuters and pedestrians on Route 40.

ACEC's annual Engineering Excellence Awards competition honors the year's most outstanding engineering accomplishments across a range of categories. Projects across the nation are rated on uniqueness and innovative applications; future value to the engineering profession; perception by the public; social, economic, and sustainable development considerations; complexity; and the successful fulfillment of client/owner's needs.
