Texas Water Development Board Authorizes $63.6M in Flood Mitigation Assistance Grants

AUSTIN, TX — The Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) recently authorized awards for $63.6 million in Flood Mitigation Assistance grants. The grants are funded through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and will be used to mitigate flood damages and prevent future losses. Thirteen applications were approved by FEMA for this assistance.

The TWDB administers FEMA's Flood Mitigation Assistance grant program for Texas. FEMA annually accepts applications for these grants.

The 13 projects receiving fiscal year 2020 Flood Mitigation Assistance grants include the following:

  • Harris County - $8,494,368 for drainage projects


  • Harris County Flood Control District - $14,662,361 for acquisition projects


  • Harris County Flood Control District - $3,760,150 for an acquisition project


  • City of Houston - $1,456,947 for elevation projects


  • Jefferson County - $1,010,727 for elevation projects


  • Jefferson County Drainage District No. 6 - $10,138,258 for drainage projects


  • Jefferson County Drainage District No. 6 - $2,139,870 for drainage projects


  • Jefferson County Drainage District No. 6 - $1,715,078 for drainage projects


  • Jefferson County Drainage District No. 6 - $25,000 for a hazard mitigation plan project


  • City of Jersey Village - $4,536,131 for elevation projects


  • Montgomery County - $12,403,485 for acquisition projects


  • City of Pearland - $499,760 for elevation projects


  • City of Taylor Lake Village - $2,754,104 for elevation projects


In addition to the FEMA grants, communities will contribute approximately $10,232,036 of local funds. The Flood Mitigation Assistance grant program assists communities by providing federal funds for cost-effective measures to reduce or eliminate the long-term risk of flood damage to buildings, manufactured homes, and other structures insurable under the National Flood Insurance Program.
