The Weitz Company Breaks Ground on New City of Grimes Public Library in Iowa
GRIMES, IA — The Weitz Company has broken ground for the new Grimes Public Library.
Employees from The Weitz Company, Grimes City Council Members, The Grimes Public Library, and Invision Architecture recently gathered to break ground on the site. The new library will be built on the corner of North James and Beaverbrooke Boulevard.
The new 22,300-square-foot library will include five study rooms, a coffee bar, and a drive-thru book drop-off and pickup, as well as other new amenities meant to promote inclusiveness and accessibility.
These amenities include a sensory room designed for individuals with sensory stimulation sensitivities and doubles as a space for nursing mothers. In addition, the library will include a Picture Exchange Communication System on the first floor to accommodate those with communication needs.
“It is an opportunity for all of us to come together, all backgrounds, all ages, all abilities, to come together and to play together, to interact together and to socialize together,” said Cheryl Heid, Library Director.
The new public library will be funded by a combination of donations, city and library funds, and LOSST funds. The new Grimes Public Library is set to open in the fall of 2023.
“As I worked with the library board of trustees they really saw this building not as just a building, not as just a library but as a place that community can come together, and at its core, that's what Grimes is,” said Eric Johansen, Grimes Council Member.
