USGBC Indiana recognizes four people and four projects. The Mindy Hanni Award is named in honor of the late Mindy Hanni, one of the early adopters of LEED and green building practices in Indiana. Hanni’s service helped advance sustainable building practices throughout the state, and the individual receiving the Mindy Hanni Award and those receiving the Volunteer Leadership Awards have all been involved with the community for many years, focusing on supporting local sustainability. For the project award winners, eligible projects were judged based on the categories in the LEED rating system.

Indiana Toll Road’s new 25,000-square-foot headquarters is the epicenter for toll road monitoring, maintenance, and administration. It features open office seating, a large control room for data gathering and toll road monitoring, and a central two-story atrium operating as a warm winter solarium and shaded collaboration space in the summer. The facility is in a woodland site with a pedestrian path and photovoltaic solar panels that generate around 40 percent of the building’s energy. SmithGroup achieved high performance in many attributes of the building and site design by working as an integrated team. An open, collaborative approach to design allowed the team to set goals at the beginning of the project and see them through construction and client implementation.

Certified LEED Gold in August 2020, the Health Professions Building at Ball State University (BSU) has a design that supports interprofessional education (IPE) and practice. The building is the first phase of the university’s comprehensive $150-million initiative to expand and renovate its STEM and health professions facilities in a new health and life/hard sciences academic quad. The 167,000-square-foot building is home to BSU’s newly formed College of Health and represents the leading edge of IPE and practice, bringing together programs in nursing, counseling psychology, dietetics and nutrition, health science, social work, athletic training, and speech and audiology.
As a leading health benefits company, Anthem is committed to indoor spaces that support the health and well-being of people and communities. For Anthem’s corporate headquarters, the Lytle Center, which was certified under LEED v4.1 in February 2020, the team carefully benchmarked each aspect of sustainability and wellness in the building using audits and assessments, positioning all eight LEED categories for advancement with collaboration from multiple stakeholders.
Fieldhouse Apartments | LEED Platinum | Project Administrator: Energy Diagnostics Inc.
The Fieldhouse Apartments in Anderson, Indiana, certified in September 2019, enhance the area surrounding the Anderson Wigwam. BWI transformed the track and field of the former high school into a 44-unit apartment building, leveraging sustainable design and an array of amenities and services geared toward mental and physical health, fitness, education, and job training. It is strategically located near downtown Anderson and adjacent to the Wigwam Talent Development Center.
