WICHITA, KS — Dennis Wellner, a Founder of Populous, has been honored with a distinguished alumni award from the University of Kansas (KU) School of Architecture & Design. The award recognizes Wellner for his demonstrated leadership and contributions to the design and architectural profession.

Wellner earned bachelor's degrees in architecture and environmental design from KU and went on to become one of the most widely acclaimed football stadium designers in the U.S. He is an original Founding Principal of HOK Sport in 1983, becoming the global design firm Populous in 2009.

Wellner designed some of the first NFL stadiums that prioritized the fan experience, leading to revenue-generating programs that boosted income for many of the country's largest sports programs. He was instrumental in the initial success of HOK Sport with the contract to design the first privately funded stadium in 1987, the original home of the Miami Dolphins. His career then accelerated as he served as Principal-in-Charge for 14 different NFL stadium projects.

During the process of growing a successful sports architecture practice, Wellner developed a portfolio of award-winning projects that engaged fans across the nation. He created homes for the most recognizable names in sports, including Arrowhead Stadium, Gillette Stadium, Heinz Field, and Bank of America Stadium.

“Dennis hired me as a co-op student in 1987, and from that moment on, he and his partners provided me and others in the firm great opportunities to grow, develop, and prosper,” said Bruce Miller, Populous' Managing Director for the Americas. “His legacy is certainly about iconic venue design, but it is equally about the people and clients he helped along the way.”

Wellner has been interviewed hundreds of times on project-related topics, such as his outlook on the stadiums of the future and the influence of sports entertainment throughout economic fluctuations.
