FAIRFAX, VA Construction will begin on the second phase of rehabilitation of the Gallows Road bridge over Route 50, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The project will include concrete and steel beam repairs, bearing replacement, joint closures, and deck resurfacing for the bridge built in 1985.

Construction will initially consist of minor preliminary work, with major impact work beginning in mid-to-late spring 2017. From then until the project's completion in summer 2018, motorists can expect intermittent daytime single-lane closures during off-peak hours on Route 50 and Gallows Road. In addition, there will be nighttime multiple-lane closures during off-peak hours on Route 50 and Gallows Road.  At times, these nighttime closures will include the closure of two or more of the interchange ramps. When these ramps are closed, detour signage will be in place.

At least one lane of traffic will be open at all times on both Route 50 and Gallows Road. Access will be provided at all times to properties within the project limits.

Martins Construction Corporation is the contractor for the $4.6 million second phase of the Route 50 over Gallows Road project. The project's first phase, which involved repairs to the bridge piers, was completed in July 2016.

Gallows Road averages 39,000 vehicles a day in the area of the interchange and Route 50 averages 41,000 vehicles a day.
