Effective Equipment Keeps Mark Pruss, Inc. on Site and on Schedule
With 40 residential builders counting on them to clear lots, backfill foundations and grade yards, the employees of Mark Pruss, Inc. know the importance of maintaining a schedule.
"At three specific times during the new home construction process we, need to be on-site doing our job so others can follow," says Andrew Pruss, who is the son of the owner.
"A lot of people depend on us, and we need to get our job done or lose the work. We don't like to lose work," Pruss says.
The 33-year-old company, headquartered in North Little Rock, Arkansas, specializes in residential construction, often working 60 to 70 hours a week to keep up.
"When we're backfilling, someone is waiting for us to finish so they can do their job," says Pruss, "and later we have to work around another firm's schedule to come back and grade the yard. Grading, the final step for us, is the most difficult because often the builder is in a hurry to close the deal. It can get hectic at times."
Meeting the Challenges
"Our Bobcat machines keep getting better and better," Pruss says. "We started with a 773 and we considered it the best product in the world until we moved up to an S250, which was another jump forward. Now we have our first M-Series machine, the S750. It takes loader performance and comfort up another notch.
"It's a superior loader when it comes to balance, speed, smoothness, power, serviceability and visibility. The S750 is a great fit for the type of work we do. There is really no other single machine that would be able to handle grading and backfilling as efficiently."
"The enhancements that Bobcat added to the M-Series lineup put these machines in a class by themselves," Pruss says.
Two other Bobcat products - a compact track loader and excavator - also play an important role in keeping jobs on schedule. All of the machines were purchased from Hugg & Hall Equipment, the Bobcat compact equipment dealer in Little Rock.
"When winter weather makes the ground soft and muddy, we switch to the compact track loader," notes Pruss. "It floats over the ground, allowing us to work throughout the year.
"At the time we purchased the compact track loader, we looked at a competitive model, but the number of moving parts on the tracks scared us away. It looked like non-stop maintenance with that machine. The Bobcat loader, on the other hand, has been very dependable.
"Our Bobcat excavator is real handy for digging out compact soil, working behind curbs, installing French drains and scraping up construction trash. Excavator attachments such as the ripper and plate compactor do an excellent job for us. We use the plate compactor to compact the soil after backfilling around the foundation."
Every Little Bit Helps
Pruss appreciates all of the special features Bobcat Company has incorporated into the M-Series machines.
The Bobcat engine, pump, horsepower and cubic-inch displacement are configured precisely for each model's specific operating capacity. With a powerful standard flow, Bobcat loaders are ready for demanding tasks. An optional high flow system delivers maximum attachment performance. Engine horsepower and hydraulic system performance are finely tuned for the highest performance possible.
High-efficiency hydraulic pumps deliver more power matched to demand and providing better breakout forces. The hydraulic pumps in these loaders are matched to cylinder size and loader lift capacity to provide fast cycle times that help get the jobs done faster.
Bobcat loaders also reach maximum torque at a lower RPM to minimize stalling and save time and fuel. The optional hydraulic bucket positioning keeps the loader bucket level when raising the lift arms, reducing spillage and allowing the operators to work more efficiently.
But not all features add up to more equipment performance; some help to add to operator experience.
"Something small, such as the cup holder, is fantastic," he says. "The storage bins - both on the left and right sides of the cab - allow me to store my gloves, phone and other items. I also like the charging device for my phone. All these little things make the machine better, more comfortable and enjoyable to operate. If you sit in a loader for eight hours a day, every little bit helps."
