13M Pounds of Structural Steel Later, Block 19 Celebrates Topping Out
SEATTLE, WA More than 900 people gathered to celebrate the placement of the final beam atop the Rufus 2.0 Block 19 building. To celebrate this milestone were representatives from NBBJ, the designers of the tower, and Metals Fabrication, who produced the structural steel for the project.
The celebration, held in the tented parking lot across the street from the building, included lunch from Pacific Northwest Catering and a short speech from Block 19's Senior Superintendent, Brian Duke. He thanked the team's subcontractors, designers, and the Sellen family for all of their hard work and even gave a little background on the history of the topping out ceremony. The white beam was filled with colorful signatures and drawings from all who helped construct Block 19, and it was also decorated with a small Douglas fir tree and an American flag.
The building is currently made up of 13 million pounds of structural steel, 18.5 million pounds of rebar, and 9.6 million square feet of metal decking. The next step for the project team will be installing the curtainwall and exterior cladding, which is scheduled to complete in April 2016.
