Crews Readying to Fix I-5 Overpass Near Tumwater

TUMWATER, WA Drivers who travel on westbound 93rd Avenue south of Tumwater, Washington, will need to plan ahead for temporary traffic revisions later this month. Crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation are gearing up to repair the 93rd Avenue bridge over Interstate 5, which was damaged by an over-height load in 2015.
WSDOT's contractor, Stellar J. Corporation, will replace a girder on the overpass. To accomplish that work, crews will close the westbound lane of the 93rd Avenue bridge when construction begins in late April.
"We've worked to minimize impacts to traffic and will do a lot of work at night," said WSDOT Project Engineer Dewayne Matlock. "At the same time, there will be an around-the-clock detour for some drivers who use the 93rd Avenue overpass."
93rd Avenue overpass
"¢ Westbound 93rd Avenue drivers will have no access to southbound I-5.
"¢ Northbound I-5 drivers will have no access to westbound 93rd Avenue.
"¢ A signed detour will be provided.
The overpass is expected to reopen to two-way traffic in late June.
Bridge girders provide support and structure for the overpass spanning I-5. During this fix, I-5 drivers can expect several nights of northbound I-5 lane reductions. At times crews will reduce northbound I-5 to one lane and drivers will be directed through the 93rd Avenue interchange.
