Ground Broken on Next Phase of Loop 1604 Extension
SAN ANTONIO, TX Texas Transportation Commissioner J. Bruce Bugg, Jr., joined representatives of Bexar County and VIA Metropolitan Transit to kick off the start of a $62.5 million project extending the Loop 1604 expressway to Potranco Road on the city's far northwest side.
Zachry Construction, a local firm with major projects operating across the state, will construct the new expressway lanes with overpasses at Wiseman Boulevard, Military Drive and Potranco Road. Drivers can expect to use these new lanes in 2019.
"This is one of the fastest-growing regions of San Antonio and we're happy to provide some congestion relief for drivers now, while the growth boom is still happening," Texas Transportation Commissioner J. Bruce Bugg, Jr., said. "We are happy to partner with Bexar County and VIA, who have both stepped up as funding partners, to accelerate this project. Because of their help we are able to improve the well-being, safety and quality of life for local residents now rather than waiting until the need had become overdue."
The county is also providing the cost to construct the final leg of the Loop 1604 extension. That $64.1 million project adds an overpass at Marbach and builds a bridge over Loop 1604 at the intersection of Dove Canyon and Falcon Wolf, as well as a direct connector for southbound Loop 1604 traffic to get onto eastbound U.S. Highway 90. Webber Construction, the company that completed the I-10 Huebner project locally, will begin work on that project in 2017.
