TXAPA Annual Meeting Boasts Record Attendance and Scholarship Fundraising
AUSTIN, TX TXAPA's 2017 Annual Meeting proved to be our most successful yet. This year's meeting saw record attendance, unparalleled scholarship fundraising, and a stellar performance by entertainer Kevin Fowler. All this in addition to the traditional program including plenty of networking and the highest quality educational content. We want to thank you, our Members, your families, our TxDOT partners in quality, and every attendee. A meeting at this level cannot happen without your participation, support, and camaraderie. TXAPA also like to thank Dr. Jon Epps, of the Texas A&M Transportation Institute for his expert moderation of the technical sessions.
The Silent and Live Auctions Raised Over $200,000 in Support of the TXAPA Scholarship Fund
As anticipated, the bidding action was intense with many of the donated auction items fetching incredible sums to support our future industry leaders. The most hotly contested item of the evening turned out to be a turkey hunt for four donated by Hunter Industries. Other notable items included a Texas-themed quilt, handmade by President Hall's mother in law which sold for $6,750 and the TXAPA Necktie which is auctioned every year in honor industry pioneer Charlie Smoot. The tie went to Oscar Rodriguez for $3,250.
TXAPA would like to thank Joe Cruz and the Auction Committee for putting together a wonderful auction that exceeded our fundraising goal of $150,000 by $51,000 for a grand total of $201,000! We'd also like to recognize our auctioneer, Allen McVicker for conducting an exciting live auction and Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers for donating their services for both the live and silent auctions.
Wade Witmer Scholarship Pushes Scholarship Total to $301,000
In addition to the unparalleled generosity of our members, the scholarship fund received another big injection of support from Robert, Kayla, Keith and Katy Hall. In memoriam of their nephew and cousin, Wade Witmer, the Hall family added an additional $100,000 to the scholarship fund, increasing the grand total to $301,000. The Hall family has made this generous donation in honor of Wade's life.
New Technical Sessions Format Makes for a Smooth Program
This year our Technical Sessions were revamped to provide a more interactive, inclusive program. From the classroom layout of the America's Ballroom to the discussion-panel style of presentation, this year's sessions engaged all our members simultaneously. This format allowed everyone to participate, ensuring that no one missed valuable content and giving everybody the opportunity to benefit from the questions and comments of fellow TXAPA members.
Dedicated to Quality: 2017 Award Winners
The Technical Sessions wrapped with a showstopper on Flawless Execution delivered by Charles "Chaz" Campbell and John "Hitman" Hilterman of Afterburner so it's only fitting that the final day of the meeting kicked off with an Awards Breakfast honoring just that: flawless execution. The Quality Asphalt Awards Presentations included the QC/QA Technician Awards, the TXAPA City/Airport/Specialty Quality Asphalt Pavement Awards, and the TxDOT/TXAPA Quality Asphalt Pavement Awards. We think all of our award winners deserve another round of applause so please look for a full list of recipients in the Annual Meeting issue of our flagship magazine, Texas Asphalt.
