GeoShack Hosts Topcon Technology Roadshow Throughout Texas

The Topcon Technology Roadshow came to Texas to show off some of the industry’s most innovative new products. Topcon’s 53-foot mobile solutions trailer featuring a theater and technology showcase was onsite for attendees to have a chance to get a hands-on look at positioning and measurement solutions that can improve workflow and maximize productivity.

GeoShack hosted the events in Georgetown, Houston and Fort Worth for two days each to allow construction professionals throughout Texas to have an opportunity to attend. There was also a third day of training classes offered to those who attended in order to help them better utilize the tools available. Each event had almost 200 attendees with a mix of those already familiar with Topcon and GeoShack, as well as people looking to invest in these new technologies.

In addition to the trailer, there was an assortment of heavy equipment on hand for attendees to see how Topcon’s products could benefit their business.

“This is a great opportunity to get people in the equipment and demonstrate what Topcon can do for them” said Troy Houghton, GeoShack Regional Manager for Northwest Texas. “GeoShack and Topcon provide tools that add value by increasing productivity of equipment as well as savings in material costs and reduced wear and tear.”

One of the new technologies on exhibit was Topcon’s SmoothRide system. According to Billy Tucker, Regional Manager for NE Texas and Vice President for GeoShack, “SmoothRide is a system that will scan the road before anything is done to it and create a digital file that allows the contractor to perform repairs based on the scan. This leads to a faster job, using less materials, and creating a higher quality product for the end user.”

The system utilizes a vehicle-mounted road-resurfacing scanner to safely gather data at speed without the need for lane closures. Once collected and a design is created, the information can be sent to equipment outfitted with Topcon’s RD-MC Machine Control to allow for variable depth milling and paving. This all helps to eliminate material loss and provide for a better end product.

One of the biggest benefits of the equipment being showcased may be for those contractors struggling to find skilled equipment operators.

“The day of a motor grader operator that has 30 years of experience and has the ability to perfectly level a site by touch are gone,” said Houghton. “But what we do have now is a group of people that have grown up with video games and our technology ties right in with that. They can get on a machine with our equipment and pick it up almost instantaneously. With our technology, you can put someone in a machine who knows very little and in less than a day, they’re productive.”

The Topcon Roadshow is traveling to 28 cities in 20 different states throughout the U.S. and Canada. GeoShack will be hosting the Roadshow later in the summer at their locations in Denver, Tulsa, and Toronto.
