COSTA MESA, CA —Ā C.W. Driver Companies recently broke ground on the new $36-million Orange Coast College (OCC) Kinesiology and Athletics Complex. The 88,000-square-foot, multi-building complex is one part of a broader project to revitalize and modernize OCC’s campus, and one of three projects for OCC currently being constructed by C.W. Driver Companies. The new complex will offer a new pool and additional resources for kinesiology students.

ā€œWe are proud to be part of OCC’s revitalization plan, focusing on updating their infrastructure to reflect the forward-thinking nature of their kinesiology and athletics programs and meet the needs of the growing campus,ā€ said David Amundson, Project Executive at C.W. Driver Companies. ā€œThis new complex is designed to create a more communal campus environment, as well as improve operational and energy efficiencies for one of the nation’s largest community colleges.ā€

The new Kinesiology and Athletics Complex will provide an expanded, modernized space for a wide variety of OCC programs, including physical education, athletics, sports medicine and kinesiology studies. The construction will occur in two phases. The first phase includes new construction of a multi-building, one-story complex spanning 58,000 square feet. Phase two will focus on the renovation of the existing 30,000-square-foot building that houses the men’s and women’s locker rooms and existing pool areas.

Upon completion, the three buildings will encompass division offices, athletic training, adaptive physical education, equipment management, locker rooms/showers, support spaces for the aquatics programs, a 65‐meter competition pool with double bulkheads, 25‐meter instructional pool and 450-person bleacher covered by a canopy. The buildings will be interconnected by an overhead shade structure.

ā€œThe new Kinesiology and Athletics Complex will be a highlight to both the academic and athletic excellence that can be found here at Orange Coast College,ā€ said Rachelle Favis, Program Manager, Measure M, at Coast Community College District. ā€œWe are excited to see the iconic complex come to life in order to serve the entire Coast Colleges’ community and beyond.ā€

C.W. Driver Companies is partnering with Little Diversified Architectural Consulting on the project. In addition to Amundson, the C.W. Driver Companies team consists of Donny Dymond, Project Manager; John Wedge, Senior Superintendent; and Mark Vondran, Chief Estimator.

This complex is one part of the broader project funded by Measure M, a $698-million general obligation bond provided and supported by the local community to construct education facilities for all three colleges that comprise Coast Community College District. In addition to the Kinesiology and Athletics Complex, C.W. Driver Companies is managing the construction of several other projects at the Orange Coast College campus, including the Student Union Complex (slated for completion December 2020) and Language Arts and Social Science Building Complex (set to break ground in October 2019).
