BURLINGTON, MA — Erland Construction has received the Build New England Performance Award from the Associated General Contractors of Massachusetts (AGC MA). The AGC MA recognized Erland and Phillips Academy Andover team at its annual Build New England Awards Gala for its work on the Snyder Center, a 100,000-square-foot athletic facility, featuring a 200-meter track, 12 squash courts and multi-use space for a variety of sports and fitness activities. The Snyder Center is located on the Phillips Academy campus in Andover, Massachusetts.

The Snyder Center, completed in 2018 by Erland Construction and designed by Perkins + Will, achieved LEED (Leadership and Energy Environmental Design) Platinum certification. This is the most coveted certification level to receive from the U.S. Green Building Council.

Erland coordinated with Solect Energy Development of Hopkinton, Massachusetts, to install a 1,700-plus solar panel field on the center’s roof. Green building principles were also applied to the Snyder Center mechanical system by using the waste heat from the school’s ice rink adjacent to the Snyder Center to heat and cool the building. The building was designed as a Net Zero Energy facility.

In addition, elements of the building used recycled materials throughout construction. More than 25 percent of the materials used were recycled and close to 25 percent of regional materials were used for the project.

“We’re incredibly appreciative to have been able to share in this project’s success alongside Phillips Academy, Galanis Consulting and Perkins+Will,” said Scott Bates, Vice President, Academic, Corporate and Commercial Group Manager for Erland. “It’s rewarding to have your efforts recognized by such a prestigious association. Seeing the center come together throughout construction was an incredible experience. We’re proud of what we’ve built for Phillips Academy and its students and staff.

In 2018, the Phillips Academy Andover team received an ABC MA Excellence in Construction Eagle Award for the Snyder Center project.

Every other year, the AGC MA presents the Build New England Awards to recognize outstanding teams that build projects around New England. The program is designed to commend the owners, developers, designers, contractors and subcontractors who collaborate on the hardest and most creative commercial and institutional projects.

Erland was recognized with an AGC MA Build New England Performance Award in 2017 for their work on the John and Diane Kim Autism Institute at the New England Center for Children, a school that is dedicated to transforming the lives of children with autism, locally and internationally, through education, research and technology.
