PROVIDENCE, RI — Shawmut Design and Construction, a construction management firm, completed the renovation of 2-3 Davol Square in Providence, Rhode Island, a multi-use complex within the city's Innovation and Design District.

In partnership with Wexford Science & Technology and design firm Vision 3 Architects, Shawmut reimagined the building's large central atrium while simultaneously refreshing its lobbies and common areas to modernize the space, consistent with other nearby redevelopment projects. The most prominent change is at the main entrance along South Street, which now features a glass and steel canopy, designed to complement the recently redeveloped South Street Landing adjacent to the property.

“We continue to see an incredible transformation in the Providence Innovation & Design District, and the renovations to 2-3 Davol Square are yet another seamless complement,” said Kevin Sullivan, Executive Vice President of New England at Shawmut. “The project carefully preserved the historical character of the building while adding modern touches that will contribute to the area's forward-thinking renewal.”

In addition to the new canopy, the atrium, stairs, and elevator lobbies, each received new flooring, paint, and light fixtures. The atrium skylights and the curtain wall at the North and South entrances were replaced, and both entrances received new pavers. Exterior work included painting the existing windows and ducts.

The three Davol Square buildings were originally constructed in 1880 and added to the National Register of Historic Places a century later in 1980. They were home to the Davol Rubber Company, and later became Davol Square Marketplace before being converted to office space in the late 1980s. Shawmut's Providence office is also located within 3 Davol Square.

This project marks Shawmut's fifth within the area's redevelopment, which includes Point225, the River House Apartments, and the currently in-progress Aloft Hotel and Parcel 28 projects.
